Washington, DC

Discerning barbecue connoisseurs in the nation's capital area will be able to sample KBQ favorites, wines from Romano Vineyard & Winery and craft beers from Franklin's Brewery at an open house 1-4pm this Saturday. They're also in for a special treat: a taste of Fred Wesley.

According to Washingtonian magazine, KBQ, the acclaimed restaurant owned by Fred's children, has the best barbecue in the area. It recently reopened in a new and bigger location in the Woodmore Towne Center, 9101 Woodmore Centre Dr., Lanham, MD 20706 (301-322-1527). The new location features expanded dining and adult drinks. Come out and click here to learn more.

Thanks to the New Orleans Times Picayune for this coverage of Shorty Fest 2014, which included this great shot by Eliza Morse of Fred with Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews.

Thanks, too, to Michael Gourier for this shot of him and Fred at Piano Night at House of Blues, co-hosted by another longtime friend of Fred's, DJ. Nita K, aka Nita Ketner, who's pictured below.

Celebrating "Dr." Benny Golson!

Fred is celebrating the great jazz composer and saxophonist Benny Golson, now Dr. Benny Golson thanks to an honorary doctorate he received last week from his alma mater, Howard University. Fred is a longtime fan and admirer of Dr. Golson and, as the 2007 recipient of the Howard University Jazz Ensemble's Benny Golson Jazz Master Award, the two are forever connected through Howard.

Fred is proud to be a recipient of the award, and sends his warm congratulations on the well-deserved doctorate degree.

Jazz Fest, Macau, Europe

Fred got the royal treatment as usual in New Orleans, where he took part last week in Shorty Fest, Fiya Fest, and -- with saxophone great Donald Harrison -- the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Fest. Click here for an overview recap of Jazz Fest, and here for an excellent photo recap from Dino Perrucci, including this shot. Thanks, Dino! Thanks, New Orleans!

Thanks, too, to the organizers of the Macau International Jazz Festival, where Fred enjoyed meeting and hearing Sizhukong, The Mingus Project and Stefano Bollani. The special edition of the New JBs included Victor Wesley on trombone, Vince Evans on keys and Joel Johnson on guitar.
